What is Scrabble?

Scrabble is a game based on connected words on a board using a limited supply of random letters. You have 7 letters to use to the best of your knowledge and ability to win a round.

The letters have different points value based on their frequency of use in the language. Vowels for instance will be worth ONE point. Letters such as Z and Q will be worth 10 points.

Each new word must be connected to a previous word.

Where are letter is placed, can add to the points by either doubling / trebling the letter, or doubling / trebling the whole word. Placing a word to give you great points can also mean you open up a dangerous spot for your opponent to get even more points. So be careful.

There is much more to the game than simply being able to create a great word from given tiles. There is strategic planning to optimise points and even blocking tactics that will force other players to place low value words.

Having the right word does not mean that a high score will be obtained or that the game will be won. The game goes far beyond that and players have to develop skills that will allow them to place the best word in the best spot at the right time.

Social Scrabble

Scrabble, as a hobby can help to develop the mind as well as the vocabulary.  There is a Social Side of Scrabble. You can connect with loved ones beyond the normal hello, how are you, have you had a nice day? Or beyond the usual gossip or discussion of the news.

I must warn you that Scrabble can be addictive. Learn tactics and strategies while having fun.

Scrabble Online

There are lots of good reasons why people play Scrabble online: making friends, building a vocabulary or just plain competition.

There are many different reasons to play Scrabble. Scrabble is not only a mental exercise, but it’s also a social game. Scrabble lets people discuss the language while competing.

Playing Scrabble online allows people to meet from around the world.  It is possible to make friends or just focus on playing.  If one is serious about improving, playing against the computer – at the medium to hard levels, helps to develop better skills.  After playing against the computer for a period of time, playing against mere mortals seems very easy.

Scrabble Competitions
Of course, some people love the competition. Scrabble is a way to compete against one or more opponents in a battle of wits. Everybody wants to feel like he or she is clever sometimes, so the competitive nature of Scrabble still exists even when playing with friends and loved ones, even when everyone at the table is laughing and having a good time.

Children and Scrabble
If you teach Scrabble to your children, you are teaching them a game which builds vocabulary and word skills. When children become more interested in the words being used around them, it helps to build their language skills.

Scrabble is a Blast
Most of all, Scrabble is fun to play. We all play for that chance to lay down the perfect word in the perfect situation.

Scrabble is a generally sober past time. Scrabble lends itself to calm study of the board, so Scrabble is a game for people with level heads. When you play Scrabble, you work through challenges in a calm and reasoned fashion. I find that Scrabble is relaxing, because it forces me to forget my everyday concerns and concentrate on problem solving. Scrabble is a mental stimulant, but a pleasant one.
